What is the Indian Penal Code?
The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the official criminal code of India. It is a comprehensive code to keep Indian society legally organized. The Indian Penal Code was created in 1860 under the Charter Act 1833 under the chairmanship of Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay. And it came into force in early 1862 in British India during the British Raj. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the main criminal code of India. This Code mentions various criminal sections of the Indian Constitution and their punishment.
The Indian Penal Code provides for the definition and punishment of certain crimes committed by any citizen of India within India (except Jammu and Kashmir). But this code does not apply to the army of India. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Ranbir Penal Code applies instead. There are 511 streams in total. However, after the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha respectively, the Ranbir Penal Code will be repealed on 31 October 2019.
