In the late 1970s, the French Air Force and Navy were trying to replace and strengthen their existing fleet. To reduce development costs and boost potential sales, France teamed up with the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain to produce a multi-purpose fighter, the Eurofighter Typhoon.
France subsequently pursued its own development program due to disagreements over workshops and varying requirements. Dassault created a technical demonstrator, which first flew in July 1986 as part of an eight-year flight-test program, paving the way for the project to move forward.
Rafael differs from other European fighters of its era in that it is built almost entirely by one country, including France’s major defense contractors such as Dassault, Thalassand Saffran.
Avionics and features of many aircraft, such as direct voice input, RBE2AA active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and optronic sectional frontal infra-red search and track (IRST) sensors, were developed domestically and under the Rafale program. Were produced for.
Originally scheduled to enter service in 1996, Rafael suffered significant delays due to Cold War budget cuts and changes in priorities.
The aircraft is available in three main variants: Rafale C single-seat land-based version, Rafale B twin-seat land-based version, and Rafale M single-seat carrier-based version.
Rafael is being built for both carrier-based operations in the French Air Force and the French Navy. Rafael has been marketed for export in many countries, and was selected for purchase by the Indian Air Force, Egypt Air Force and Qatar Air Force.
Rafael has been used in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq and Syria. Several upgrades to Rafale’s weapons and avionics are planned to be introduced in 2018.
