Tirath Singh Rawat joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) after completing his studies. Became his provincial preacher in 1983 at the age of only 20.

When Uttarakhand became a state in the year 2000, he became the Education Minister of the first state government. He was also the President of Uttarakhand BJP from February 2013 to December 2015. In 2017, he was made the National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
At present he is an MP from Pauri Lok Sabha seat of Uttarakhand. Earlier, he was MLA from Chaubattakhal assembly constituency in the year 2012-2017.
