Plot
After the unsuccessful launch of GSLV-F06 on 25 December 2010, at ISRO, in Bengaluru, due to a minor mistake by Project Director Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan), Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar), a fellow scientist working with him , takes the blame for that. As a result, he is transferred to work on Mangalyaan as a punishment. The new GSLV missions have been given to Indian-origin NASA scientist Rupert Desai. The MoM (Mars Orbiter Mission) is considered by its peers as an impossible mission, as it aims to reach Mars with its tight budget.
Rakesh learns that MOM cannot fly on PSLV as the available technology has a payload of only 1500 kg and there is not enough fuel to fire the rocket which can be carried to a distance of about 5.5×10^7 km. GSLV, if it were successful, could have taken the satellite to Mars as it had a payload of 2300 kg. However, the recent critical failures of GSLV have put future planned missions in jeopardy.
Back at home, Tara is badly caught between balancing her career and her family. One day at home, Tara’s maid notices that there is insufficient gas to cook all the puris, at which point Tara tells her to heat the oil and turn off the gas, and turn it back on when the oil cools, so that The spark goes out. He got the idea to launch MOM using PSLV. They will use a burst of gas to propel the MOM satellite into outer Earth orbit, and then use Earth’s gravitational field to successfully fuel it. She approaches Rakesh with this idea, who is convinced. The two try to get other team members on board, but are instead ridiculed, though they later reconcile with the ISRO director as well. When Tara and Rakesh ask Rupert to lend specialist members of their team, Rupert gives them junior scientists and engineers who have little or no experience in mission launches.
First, Eka Gandhi (Sonakshi Sinha), the propulsion control specialist, is a young man who hates most things Indian and is looking for any chance to move away from NASA. Then there’s spacecraft autonomy designer Neha Siddiqui (Kirti Kulhari), who struggles with rejection as a result of her inter-communal background. Navigation specialist Kritika Agarwal (Taapsee Pannu) is a devoted wife who takes care of her ex-soldier husband Rishi (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), who was seriously injured in action. Satellite designer and payload specialist Varsha Pillai (Nitya Menon), struggles with the taunts of her mother-in-law at home for not being able to bear a child. Parameshwar Joshi (Sharman Joshi), the payload specialist, relies heavily on the priest and his advice and develops a romantic interest in Eka. Finally, the team’s structural engineer is Ananth Iyengar (H G Dattatreya), who is trying to complete his pilgrimage to Tirumala with his wife.
However, after the announcement of India’s second lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, the budget of the mission has been cut by 50%. Amidst tight schedule and small budget, Tara and Rakesh continue to work on their MoM project by making several compromises. Tara and Rakesh realize that the junior scientists working on the project are low on morale and motivated to complete the mission, which slows the team down. Tara soon learns that in order to meet her budget and schedule, she has to change her perspective on the team members, and inspire them to turn their dream job into a reality. He is successful with it, and the team puts all their hard work and energy into solving the issues with the mission and making it happen. Meanwhile, Varsha becomes pregnant and soon gives birth to a baby boy. The MoM satellite is finally launched on PSLV on 5 November 2013 (after an 8-day delay due to weather), and is named Mangalyaan (Sanskrit: Mars-craft) and has been successfully inserted into Earth orbit. . Rakesh and his team celebrated the successful launch. However, while performing the sixth orbit-raising maneuver, the jets fail to launch, pushing the mission back by 6 days. Rupert makes fun of the team, while Tara hopes something will happen. A few months later, on its way to Mars, the satellite is hit by a solar radiation wave, causing massive damage to the satellite’s communication system. When the team manages to obtain communications, they discover that solar radiation had accelerated the satellite and propelled it further, causing a 6-day lag while performing orbital maneuvers with Earth. After a 298-day transit to Mars, the MOM satellite was placed into Mars orbit on 24 September 2014, making it the fourth country in the world to do so and the first to do so on its first attempt.

Reception
Critical response
Mission Mangal received generally positive reviews from critics. Rajeev Masand of News18 gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and said, “After all, Mission Mangal is enjoyable and entertaining. Even the linguism doesn’t seem completely redundant. Director Jagan Shakti gives a space film which Gets up again and again. Climbs up.” Raja Sen of Hindustan Times gave the film only 2 out of 5 stars and said, “The facts are brilliant, but director Jagan Shakti decided to go fast and fictional, creating a downtrodden story that was often liked. Plays like a story.”
