Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter. She won a silver medal in the 49kg category at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. She is the first woman to win a silver medal in weightlifting for India. She has been regularly participating in international competitions in the 48kg category since 2014. Chanu has won medals in World Championship and Commonwealth Games. He has also received Padma Shri award from the Government of India for his contribution in the field of sports.

Personal life of Mirabai Chanu

Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Imphal, the capital of the north eastern state of Manipur, India. His mother’s name is Saikohan Ungbi Tombi Lima, a shopkeeper by profession, while his father’s name is Manohar Kriti Meitei who is working in the PWD department. Mirabai Chanu was interested in Bharattolak since her childhood as she used to practice picking up wooden sticks at the age of 12.

Career of Mirabai Chanu

Chanu won the silver medal in the 48kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won the gold medal with a world record in the 2018 edition held in Gold Coast. His biggest achievement was winning the gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, USA. Chanu won the first silver medal for India in the 49 kg lift at the Olympics on 24 July 2021. She won the silver medal in snatch by lifting 87 kg, in clean and jerk by lifting 115 kg and lifting a total of 202 kg.

Chanu opened the account in the medal tally by giving India its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (2021). Significantly, Chanu has become the first Indian weightlifter after Ms. Karnam Malleswari (bronze medal in Sydney Olympics 2000) to win a medal in weightlifting and to win a silver medal for India.

Chanu broke her own record of 186 kg in the Commonwealth Games and set a new record of 202 kg.  She won a silver medal in the 48 kg category of weightlifting event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. He lifted a total of 170 kg, out of which 75 were in snatch and 95 in clean and jerk. She qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but failed to win a medal after all three failed clean and jerk attempts.

In 2017 she won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category in the 194 kg (85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean and jerk) weightlifting at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships, Anaheim, California, USA. He is from the state of Manipur, India.

Chanu lifted 196 kg, of which 86 kg was in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk, and won India’s first gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Along with this, he also broke the record of 48 kg category of Commonwealth Games.

The honor received by Mirabai Chanu

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced a cash amount of ₹15 lakh to win gold with a world record in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2018, he was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2018.
