Plot
Dr. Kabir Rajdhir Singh is a House Surgeon at Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences. Despite being a brilliant student and surgeon, he has serious anger management problems that earn the wrath of the college dean. Kabir’s aggressive nature earned him a reputation as a college bully among his juniors. After an altercation with the students of another college, the dean orders Kabir to either apologize or leave the college. Kabir initially chooses to leave, but changes his mind upon seeing Preeti Sikka, a shy first year student.
Kabir and his friends enter a class of male medical students to announce that Kabir has claimed Preeti, warning them that she is exclusive to him. Though initially timid, Preeti starts adjusting to Kabir’s domineering attitude. She eventually reciprocates his feelings and they develop a passionate, intimate relationship. Kabir is a graduate with an MBBS degree and leaves for Mussoorie to pursue a master’s degree in orthopedic surgery. Despite the long distance, Kabir and Preeti’s relationship grows stronger in the next few years. After Preeti graduates, Kabir visits the house to meet her orthodox Sikh parents, but her father Harpal leads the two to kiss and throws Kabir out.
Harpal opposes Preeti and Kabir’s relationship despite Kabir’s efforts to explain that he loves Preeti and wants to marry her. Enraged and with his ego injured, Kabir demands that Preeti choose between him or his family within six hours, or he will end their relationship. By the time she reaches his house to talk with Kabir, he panics to himself thinking that Preeti doesn’t want him, gets drunk and injects himself with morphine. He remains unconscious for two days and remembers his elder brother Karan’s wedding. Meanwhile, Preeti’s family members force her to arrange an arranged marriage. When Kabir wakes up and learns this, he goes to Preeti’s house, crashes the wedding party and violently protests; Harpal beat him up and arrested him. After Kabir’s release, his father, Rajdhir, excommunicates him from the family for his actions.
With the help of his friend Shiv, Kabir finds a rented flat and gets admitted to a private hospital as a surgeon. To cope with his feelings, he starts using drugs and alcohol, tries one-night stands, buys a pet dog and names it after Preeti; All these measures are unsuccessful. Within months, he becomes a successful surgeon and a high-functioning alcoholic, both respected and feared by hospital staff because of his high surgical numbers and aggressiveness. Kabir’s self-destructive behavior and obsession with Preeti worries his friends. He persuades one of his patients, film actress Jiya Sharma, to have sex without strings with him, which he ends when she professes love for him.
Hungry on a day off, Kabir is called upon to undergo an emergency surgery, to which he reluctantly agrees. During the procedure, he collapses from dehydration. Suspicious, hospital staff obtain samples of his blood, which contain traces of alcohol and cocaine. The hospital chief registers a case against Kabir and, during an internal hearing, admits to his alcoholism, violating medical ethics, and endangering patients, despite Shiva and Karan making arrangements to get him out. Kabir’s medical license is suspended for five years and he has been evicted from his flat. The next morning, he learns of his grandmother’s death; At the funeral, she and Rajdhir reconcile emotionally and Kabir resolves to give up his destructive habits.
During a drive, Kabir sees a heavily pregnant Preeti sitting in the park, looking sad. Later he accompanies Shiva to her, begging him to listen. He insists that he raise the child with her if he is unhappy with her marriage, and asks her to leave with him. Preeti initially sits quietly and refuses to see him, but then bursts into tears in anger, yelling at Kabir for abandoning him so easily and asking him to get lost. Shiv then tells about Kabir’s overdose, which Preeti was unaware of, and all that Kabir has suffered in the last nine months. Shocked, Preeti confesses that she actually left her husband three days after the wedding, has since separated herself from her family, and is working in a clinic to support herself; Far from angrily, especially after hearing about Kabir’s affair with the actress, he had refused to approach her. In a plot twist, Preeti reveals that her marriage was never consummated and the child actually belongs to Kabir. The couple marries and are reunited with their respective families, and Harpal apologizes to them. The film ends with Kabir and Preeti with their child on the beach.

Production
Development
After the success of his debut, 2017 Telugu film Arjun Reddy, writer and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga wanted to remake it in Hindi with Ranveer Singh. When things did not work out, he approached Shahid Kapoor. However, Cine1 Studios producers Murad Khetani and Ashwin Varde, which acquired the Hindi remake rights, wanted Arjun Kapoor to play the lead. A disappointed Vanga said, “I have learned that the remake rights of Arjun Reddy have been sold and it will feature Arjun Kapoor. I am in a dilemma, as I have already locked Shahid for the role. Shameful for me. Situation. I don’t know how I will face Shahid.” In April 2018, however, it was officially announced that Shahid Kapoor would star, with Vanga returning as director.
Bhushan and Krishan Kumar of T-Series also produced the film. The dialogue was written by Siddharth-Garima. Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran was cast as the cinematographer and Arif Sheikh as Ya. Vanga was confident that the remake would be even more difficult than the original: “When I made Arjun Reddy, I wasn’t sure where to draw the line in terms of representation of certain things. I don’t think I will when it comes to the Hindi version.” If it comes, I have to restrict myself. I am sure I will have more freedom in Bollywood.” The title of the film Kabir Singh was announced on 25 October 2018.
Writing
Like the Telugu original, Kabir Singh also begins with the voiceover of the protagonist’s maternal grandmother, but this time she is reciting Kabir Doha. There are also geographic changes; The remake is mainly set in Delhi and Mumbai. Instead of caste clashes as Arjun Reddy, the heroine’s father takes offense at Kabir smoking and not being a turban-wearing Sikh. For the remake, Vanga said that she used less English than the original. “I have also tried to maintain the colloquial quality in the Hindi dialogue.” Regarding the name Kabir Singh, he said, “The name Kabir has a lot of sadness and a poetic side too.” Vanga explained her reasons for choosing it as the film’s title: “When we started working on the Hindi script, it was a very exciting journey. Kabir Singh as the name of the protagonist, looking at the graph of the character. It came naturally. Kabir Singh’s Wahi Hai Punch and Arjun Reddy’s madness.”
Casting
Shahid Kapoor with his co-star Kiara Advani at the film’s promotional event in 2019.
Shahid Kapoor portrays the title character, Kabir Rajdhir Singh. Though Kiara Advani was Vanga’s first choice for the female lead, Preeti, things didn’t materialize. Tara Sutaria was then announced but dropped when scheduling conflicts led to delays in the production of her debut film Student Of The Year 2 (2019). The producers then turned to Advani to play the role of Preeti, with Vanga as M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) There is a reason for this. According to Vanga, “Kiara epitomizes the female character to T in the film. She has the right combination of innocence (in terms of looks) and maturity (in terms of performance) which is very important for the character”. Arjan Bajwa was initially not interested in playing the role of Kabir’s elder brother Karan Singh, but accepted at Vanga’s insistence, for which he was the only option to play the character. Amit Sharma, who appeared as Amit in the Telugu original, was roped in to reprise his role.
Filming
The makers considered to start shooting in August, but got delayed in September as Vanga wanted Kapoor to grow his beard more for the role. Principal photography finally began on 21 October 2018 in Mumbai, four days before the title was announced. Filming also took place in Delhi and Mussoorie. Kapoor has donned three different looks for the film. Regarding this, he said, “There is a certain mind space and present that has the character and also a past that he has been a part of. Along with this, there is a culmination. So, there are three different energies that the film needs.” He did enough exercise to portray Kabir in two timelines; To achieve the character’s “college boy” look, he lost 14 kilos, and for the “puffy, groggy alcoholic” look, he worked out in such a way that he looked “big but not muscular”. Principal photography wrapped on 29 March 2019.
