  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Shinde’s camp in Gwalior in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
  • His father Shri Krishna Bihari Vajpayee worked in Gwalior. Atalji’s grandfather Pt. Shyam Lal Bihari Vajpayee was a famous Sanskrit scholar.
  • Atalji did his early education at a local school, then graduated from Victoria College, Gwalior.
  • He received a first class master’s degree in political science from DAV Kanpur College.  He then got admission in the university to study law.
  • Surprisingly, Atal Bihari Vajpayee studied law with his father. As law students, they both lived together in dorm rooms.
  • Atal ji did not marry. He pledged to remain single for a lifetime as a pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for the betterment of the country.
  • Atalji came into contact with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in his early life. He also participated in the ‘Quit India’ movement of 1942 and remained in jail for 24 days.
  • He gained a distinguished reputation in the field of journalism.
  • Atalji wrote many books. He was also very fond of poems. He often expressed his ideas through poems.
  • Atalji is a skilled speaker. His manner of speaking is absolutely unique.
  • Atalji entered politics from journalism.  On 6 April 1980, he was appointed as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • On 16 May 1996, Atalji was sworn in as the 10th Prime Minister of the country. But this time, he had to resign in front of the number force.
  • On 19 March 1998, Atalji was sworn in again as the Prime Minister of the country.  On 13 October 1999, Atalji was sworn in as Prime Minister for the third time.
  • Earlier in 1997, he became the External Affairs Minister in the Janata Party government and made his speech in Hindi at a session of the United Nations.
  • It is true that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an experienced BJP leader, but he also had a special place among opposition parties.
  • Even Jawaharlal Nehru had predicted that Atal ji would one day be the Prime Minister of India.
  • In December 2005, Vajpayee announced his retirement from active politics.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee was called his close friend and relative ‘Bapji’.
  • He has an adopted daughter, Namita.
  • Atalji is not only a politician but also a famous person and writer.  His everlasting and free nature makes him great.
  • Today Atalji has reached the highest position of politics where no person needs any political aspect.  But it is a matter of pride for any person or persons.
  • He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, for his outstanding works.
