Renuka Vahaye of The Times of India gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of five, calling it “a tedious, scrappy watch despite the hype of entertainment, humor and nobility”. He concluded, “India is well-intentioned, entertaining and does not fall into the trap of commercial potboilers”. CNN-News18’s Priyanka Sinha Jha rated the film with three stars out of five, praising Khan for her performance, and feels the script is a bit lengthy and requires ‘sharp’ editing. In the end, she says, “For all its virtues, India falls short of becoming a tour de force, but it can become a crowd-puller.” Trade analyst and critic Taran Adarsh agrees with Jha on trimming the script and gives it four out of five stars. Declaring it a “smash-hit”, he praised Ali, Kaif for the direction and Khan for the performance. He feels that the film is an emotional journey that wins over the audience. Gulf News’s Manjusha Radhakrishnan also says that it would have benefited from trimming, so the film looks “sluggish”, which can test the patience of the audience. And, she gives it two out of five stars. Ananya Bhattacharya, who writes for India Today, praised Kaif and Khan’s performances, but feels the main attraction is Sunil Grover. She also rates it with three stars out of five and concludes that Salman has given ‘a different entertainer’ to his fans. Writing for CNN-News18, Rajeev Masand found the film “indescribably boring” and “annoyingly long”. He rated the film with two stars out of five. Anna M.M.Vaticad of Firstpost finds the film laden with weak ‘humor’ and ‘weak’ songs. Rating it with two stars out of five, Vaticad concluded, “Far from being Forrest Gump with Salman Khan, India is mostly a plodding trek to post-1947 contemporary India.” Jyoti Sharma Bawa of Hindustan Times found it ‘an emotional Eid winner’ and rated it with three stars out of five. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave it two and a half stars out of five and said, “The good thing about the film is that despite its eye-roll moments, it attempts to make an ‘ordinary’ man without any special skills. ” Anupama Chopra of Film Companion, “Madam, a lady with courage and conviction, is the most memorable character in India. I would love to see contemporary history from her point of view. This version has sweep and swagger but not enough soul.”
