Democracy in India Essay

India is said to be the largest democracy in the world in terms of numbers. Democracy is that form of government in which the will of the people is supreme. In today’s time in big countries it is not possible for the entire population to gather in one place, discuss and control the whole affairs. Therefore the government is run by the elected representatives of the people. Democracy is considered to be the best of all political forms of governments. Hence democracy is the most cultured and civilized political institution.

Democracy is the temple in which there is only one idol to worship and that is the idol of the people. Democracy provides freedom of thought, speech and action to its people. Elections are held after a certain period. General elections have been held many times in India. This shows that the foundation of democracy here is stable. Compared to most neighboring countries, such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, governments have been suddenly overthrown. Military rules have been imposed on these countries, due to which the freedom of the people is curtailed.

It is not only important to conduct elections, but people in India have developed mature judgment. When they find that a particular political party failed to represent their sentiments, the people of India kicked that party out. In 1977, Congress (I) was defeated in the elections. Within two and a half years, when the Indian people felt that the Janata government was incapable of giving good, they again brought back the Congress. The state elections in the recent past have also witnessed many surprising political changes.

The Congress had to face defeat in the elections in Haryana and Punjab. This is despite the fact that majority of the voters are still not highly educated. However, overall, people in India have developed mature judgment which is essential for the success of democracy. The Indian electorate has once again thrown the Congress out of power in the recent general elections. Recently a new trend of governance has emerged, in the sense that no political party could secure a majority, resulting in two consecutive coalition governments, first by the NDA and the second by the UPA.

It is a matter of grave concern that many deficiencies have come to our democratic set-up. Most of the political leaders in our country have become corrupt and selfish. Sometimes, one finds that democracy in our country is no longer a government of the people, for the people and by the people. It is only a handful of selfish leaders who are ruling the country regardless of public welfare, which should be an important aspect of any democracy. Once elected, the ruling party forgets the voters and starts filling its coffers.

This is certainly not healthy for the continuation of democracy. When we compare Indian democracy with the democracy of England, we wonder at our public morality. The politicians here are hesitant to give up their seats of power once the people have voted. For the success of democracy in our country we need clean public life of politicians. The recent scams regarding the 2G scam have given a blow to the democratic system in India. If the people of our country are alert, then only there is some hope for the future of democracy in India.
