What is Namami Gange Program

Namami Gange Program ‘, a unified conservation mission, which was approved by the Central Government as a’ flagship program ‘in June 2014, has two objectives of protection from water pollution and to keep the rejuvenation of the national river Ganga effective. Main pillars of the Namami Gange Program

The main pillars of the Namami Gange program are: –

  • Sewerage treatment infrastructure

The implementation of the Namami Gange program includes entry-level activities (for immediate visible effect), medium-term activities (to be implemented within half a decade time frame) and long-term activities (to be implemented within 1 decade) Is divided into.

 

Achievements of Namami Gange Program 

The major achievements under the “Namami Gange program” are: –

1. Creating sewerage treatment capacity

63 sewerage management projects were implemented in these states under implementation in the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Simultaneously two projects based for Jagjitpur, Haridwar, and Ramanna, Varanasi have been started.

2. Creating river-front development

28 river-front development projects and 33 entry-level projects for construction, modernization and Renewal of 182 ghats and 118 Mortuary have been initiated.

3. River Surface Cleaning

For the collection of solid waste floating from the ghats and river surface – the cleaning and disposal of the driver have been included in service at 11 places.

4. Biodiversity Conservation

There are several biodiversity conservation projects: Biodiversity conservation and Ganga rejuvenation, fish and fishery conservation in Ganga river, Ganga river dolphin conservation education program has been started. 5 Biodiversity Centers at Dehradun, Narora, Allahabad, Varanasi, and Barrackpore have been identified for restoration of priority species.

5. Afforestation 

Forestry intervention for Ganga through Wildlife Institute of India; Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute and Center for Environmental Education has been started. Internal interventions for the Ganga have been executed as per the detailed project report prepared by the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun at a project cost of 5 years (2016-2021). Work has been started in 7 districts of Uttarakhand for 2300 crore medicinal plants.

6. Public awareness

A series of events such as events, workshops, seminars and conferences, and various IEC activities were organized to create a strong pitch for public outreach and community partaking in the program.

Various awareness activities were organized through rallies, campaigns, exhibitions, labor donations, sanitation campaigns, competitions, plantation drives, and the development and distribution of resource materials and TV/radio, print media advertisements, advertisements, especially for wider publicity.

Featured mediums such as articles and advertisements were published. The Gange theme song was widely released and played on digital media to increase the visibility of the program. NMCG ensured presence on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.

7. Industrial Effort Monitoring

The number of gross polluting industries (GPIs) in April 2019 is 1072. Regulation and enforcement is done through regular and surprise inspections of GPIs for compliance verification against prescribed environmental regulations.

GPIs are inspected on an annual basis for compliance verification of pollution norms and process modifications wherever required through third level technical institutes.

In 2017, the first round of GPI inspections by third-party technical institutions has been carried out. The second round of GPI inspections is completed in 2018. In 2018, 961 GPIs were inspected, 636 are compliant, 110 are non-compliant and 215 are self-closing.

Action has been taken against 110 non-compliant GPIs and closure guidelines have been issued under Section 5 of the E (P) Act. Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring Station (OCEMS) connectivity installed from CPCB server at 885 out of 1072 GPIs.

8. Ganga Village

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MoDWS) identified 1674 gram panchayats located on the banks of the river Ganges in 5 states (Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal). Rupees. 578 crore has been released to the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MoDWS) for construction of toilets in 1674 gram panchayats of 5 Ganga Basin states.

Out of the targeted 15, 27,105 units, MoDWS has completed the construction of 8, 53,397 toilets. Consortiums of 7 IITs are engaged in preparation of the Ganga River Basin Scheme and have been adopted by 13 IITs to develop 65 villages as model villages.

UNDP is engaged as the executing agency for the rural sanitation program and to develop Jharkhand as a model state at an estimated cost. 127 crores Rs.

The Ganges has been a perennial attraction for many international countries specializing in the rejuvenation of the Ganges River. Countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, Israel, etc. have shown interest in collaborating with India for Ganga rejuvenation.
