The sad part is that around 3221 people have died from this infection all over the world. India's inadequate health infrastructure along with factors such as population density, poverty and illiteracy make India highly vulnerable to COVID-19. India has so far reported 28 positive cases of COVID-19 infection.
The Ministry of Health through its Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme-IDSP network is trying to locate those who have come in contact with those 28 people. Since COVID-19 is a respiratory-based virus, it can spread in a short time and turn into an epidemic. An outbreak of the corona virus (COVID-19) came to light when the World Health Organization was informed on December 31, 2019, of the huge increase in pneumonia cases of unknown cause in Wuhan city of Hubei province, China.
It was subsequently declared a Global Health Emergency by the World Health Organization. Soon the disease spread to China and the rest of the world. The virus was first named SARS-CoV-2, which was later renamed COVID-19.
The Polymerase Chain Reaction-PCR test is the first test for COVID-19 virus, in which all suspected patients are tested.
If the results in this test are positive, the sample is sent to the National Institute of Virology-NIV, Pune for confirmation, which is currently the only government laboratory to perform genome sequencing.
What is COVID-19 ?
According to the WHO, CO in COVID-19 refers to the corona, while VI marks the virus, D marks the disease and the number 19 marks the year 2019 (the year of detection of the disease).
It is named by the WHO under guidelines issued in 2015 by the global agency World Animalisation for Animal Health and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Why is China very sensitive to viruses?
In places where there is a relationship between irregular blood and other physical contact between humans and animals, there is a high prevalence of the virus.
China's animal markets are examples of similar sites where the transmission of the virus from animals to humans is more likely.
These markets increase the probability of viruses in humans due to the sale of meat of many animals in Chinese markets.
When a large human community joins the transmission chain of this virus, a state of mutation arises which proves fatal to the human community.
India's vulnerability to viruses
India-based airports can be a hotspot against any disease due to the large number of people coming from all over the world.
A large section of India's population uses public transport, which can accelerate the spread of COVID-19.
Devices such as thermal screening at airports and ports are also unable to identify individuals infected with the COVID-19 virus because the infected person is not experiencing symptoms during the Incubation Period.
The molecular testing being done to test the COVID-19 virus is also questionable as most of its results have been inaccurate.
Health infrastructure is inadequate at the level of physical and human resources in India.
There is a lack of awareness about health and hygiene among the people.
Symptoms of virus
Common symptoms include cough, fever and obstruction of respiratory function.
At the same time, serious infections include pneumonia, kidney failure, which can lead to human death.
Ways to prevent infection
Avoiding raw or undercooked animal products.
If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, contact the doctor quickly and share information about your previous visit with your healthcare provider.
Avoiding close contact with anyone affected by fever and cough.
Covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
Cleaning hands using alcohol-based soap and water.
All people should avoid going to crowded places.
Has this virus taken the form of an epidemic?
The World Health Organization has not yet declared it an epidemic. According to the WHO, if a disease spreads throughout the world, then it is put under epidemic. But the way this disease is spreading outside China also is a matter of concern.
Since this disease makes people, children and the elderly with a poor immune system easily vulnerable, it is a better option to avoid it than to panic.
This disease can be avoided. Around 51,000 people worldwide have been cured of the disease. Which is a clear proof that it can be dealt with.
Potential steps to be taken by the government
There is no definitive treatment or vaccine available against COVID-19 yet. Therefore the government's response strategy undoubtedly depends on basic measures such as risk communication, health education, social disturbances, and home segregation.
Coordination should be established in social organizations, various ministries and departments through the National Crisis Management Committee-NCMC set up to deal with major natural or anthropogenic disasters.
A dedicated web portal should be set up, which includes key indicators, disease identification guidelines, risk communication materials and action plans.
The government should set up laboratories equipped with more and more state-of-the-art equipment so that the infection can be fully confirmed in the individual.
The government should arrange for separation kits, masks etc. with the facility of isolation wards.
The government should make an in-depth inspection of all persons coming from abroad at all airports and ports.
The Ministry of Health should also issue a travel advisory.
Road ahead
Preparation to prevent corona virus is not only the responsibility of the government but also all institutions, organizations, private and public sectors, even all individuals should make contingency and advance preparation plans.
Large-scale behavior change will be the cornerstone of a successful response. This requires appropriate risk measures and a new integrated approach towards community health programs.
The right information is the best option for rescue, so the government, social organizations and people should disseminate the right guidelines.
